Valencia took it easy at the end of this game and secured a place in the knockout phase of the Champions League.

Their point knocked Fiorentina out of the competition and all the drama of the night was reserved for the Florence game that saw six goals as first Fiorentina and then Girondins Bordeaux came from behind with the French side equalising in the last seconds of a match that saw them reduced to nine men two minutes after half time.

With Manchester United already through to the next stage the holders made four changes in midfield and attack. Solskjaer and Sheringham were paired in attack but it was midfielder Quinton Fortune who impressed most among those introduced by manager Ferguson.

United are now assured of avoiding the other Group winners in Fridays's draw but were poor in the first half hour in heavy conditions after long recent spells of rain in Spain.

Miguel Angel Angulo blazed a shot over the bar in only the second minute after cutting inside from the right and Gerard Lopez fluffed a later chance when a driven cross from Angulo found him unmarked.

Santiago Canizares in the home goal had to defy a shot from Solskjaer after half an hour but Teddy Sheringham failed to convert United's best chance of the game when Fortune sent in an excellent cross which he could not bring down and hit on target.

Jocelyn Angloma almost scored in the 39th minute when he slapped the post from the edge of the area with an angled drive across the face of goal and he was energetic all night.

His energy looked out of place in the second half as both sides drained the game of interest. A draw suited both teams and the last twenty minutes looked like practice on the training ground. In such circumstances it was surprising that the first half was entertaining.
