Kyiv Dynamo took advantage of a weakened Bayern Munich side to register a 2-0 win but the Ukrainian champions need not have bothered.
Real Madrid's narrow 1-0 victory against Rosenorg in Trondheim knocked Kyiv out of the competition. A 20-0 win would not have been enough.
Bayern travelled with only fifteen players in their squad for a game that meant nothing to them with the Bundesliga title defence starting to give some concern to the German club. They are now level on points with Bayer Leverkusen at the top but many expected the league to be all but won by this stage.
Kyiv could only beat the team in front of them and this they managed well.
Kakha Kaladze scored the first goal in the 34th minute when he followed an inswinging corner into the goalmouth and helped the ball over the line with his chest.
Fellow Georgian Georgi Demetradze took the game beyond Bayern with an overhead volley in the 74th minute.
The home team were thoroughly depressed at the end as UEFA officials and tv crews confirmed the news of Real Madrid's win. On a sad note Kyiv coach Valery Lobanovsky was taken ill at the end of this game for the third time this season with chest complaints and was unable to give inteviews.
Lobanovsky was due to confirmed as the new coach of the Ukraine national team once his club side had finished their Champions League campaign but a recurrence of the 61 year old's health problems throws doubt on his new responsibilities.
