A bad night for Peru saw captain and goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert miss a penalty and his defence concede two goals in Lima to start their 2002 World Cup campaign with a defeat.
The action was resevred for the second half other than two good chances for Carlos Pizarro one of which he missed badly and Chilavert produced a great reflex save to deal with the other.
The same player won Peru a penalty in the 54th minute when he was brought down in the penalty area after he was allowed space to attack the back line. Real Madrid transfer target Nolberto Solano converted the chance and Peru won the game only seconds later when the impressive Roberto Palacios streaked a long range shot into the net.
Chilavert's chance to get his team back into the match came in the 70th minute but he placed a weak shot far too close to Peru counterpart Oscar Ibanez who beat the ball away.
