First Published: Nov 08, 2000

Leeds United got the point they needed and survived second half pressure by AC Milan to get the draw they wanted to send them into last sixteen.

AC Milan threw away the chance to take the lead when Andriy Shevchenko slapped a penalty kick against the post in the 25th minute.

The spot kick was awarded when the Ukraine striker played a one-two to set Serginho through on goal and his shot was handled by Leeds defender Gary Kelly with the ball coming off the underside of his arm.

This fluff spurred Milan into a dominant spell with Shevchenko seeing a shot on target deflected over the bar by a lunge from Lucas Radebe. Oliver Bierhoff headed over when in the clear from the resulting corner.

Young Leeds goalkeeper Paul Robinson had to parry a drive from Serginho in the 43rd minute with the home side starting to work some good passing moves across the rough surface but the Premiership side got into the lead only seconds before a half time.

A Lee Bowyer corner exposed the Milan defence and Dominic Matteo was unmarked at the near post to slam in a header that silenced the Milan and Barcelona crowds.

Milan fired three shots over the bar in the opening two minutes of the second half but Leonardo forced a good save from Robinson with a low drive but Ian Harte almost grabbed a second goal for Leeds when he angled a header at goal which Dida managed to save from a corner.

Harte had to block a Demetrio Albertini shot on target and Radebe almost turned a Serginho skidding cross into his own net.

Zvonomir Boban replaced Leonardo and started to influence the play in midfield for Milan and his cross forced a great save from Robinson when Shevchenko stooped to head at goal in the 63rd minute.

Two minutes later Serginho equalised for Milan when he cut inside on a run and drove the ball into the far corner but Leeds held on to recover their composure aganst a below-average Milan team.
