Hamburg SV missed their big chance to progress in the Champions League by throwing away the lead at home to the Spanish champions.
The Bundesliga club had an excellent start when Iranian international Mehdi Mahdavikia was put clear by Niko Kovac for a neat low finish into the corner of the net.
It all went wrong for the port city club in the 58th minute when Deportivo substitute Roy Makaay controlled a loose ball and stuck in the chance after Hamburg failed to clear a cross. Juventus' collapse in Athens meant that Hamburg had to win but at least they edged the Turin club out of a UEFA Cup place.
