Champions League - Panathinaikos 3 Juventus 1

First Published: Nov 08, 2000

A night of disaster for Juventus in Athens sent the Turin giants reeling out of European competition.

Juve had to play the last 35 minutes with ten men after goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar was sent off for bringing down Nikos Liberopoulos and then saw Darko Kovacevic red carded for a second booking in the 72nd minute.

It was the second time in two matches that Juve had seen two players sent off in the Champions League and they will start next season's European matches with several suspensions if they qualify this season.

Panathinaikos were dominating even before ill-discipline ruined Juventus and former Juve star Paulo Sousa scored a rare 6th minute goal to start of a great night of celebration for the Athens club.

The Portuguese international curled a shot into the top corner of the net but Filippo Inzaghi equalised in the 24th minute when Kovacevic slipped him the ball at close range after defender Leonidas Vokolas gave the ball away.

Van der Sar's 57th minute foul gave Angelos Basinas a penalty which he converted and Krzysztof Warzycha was put clear by Liberopoulos in the 63rd minute to send in a low drive on target to seal the win.

So Juventus join FC Barcelona in the crisis spotlight over the next week or so.
