Brazil gave new coach Emerson Leao a winning start to his new job thanks to an injury time goal from AC Milan star Roque Junior.
The winning goal came right at the death and saved Leao some harsh media criticism of a display that made hard work of overcoming a Colomia team intent on defnce.
The Brazilian press are unlikely to give the new team good reviews though.
Roque Junior jumped to head in a corner in Sao Paolo as Leao watched from a television comentary position. The new coach is currently banned from standing on the touchline at matches.
For most of this game the Brazilians were as poor and weak in attack as they had been in earlier qualifiers for former coach Wanderley Luxemburgo.
The fans booed at half time with Rivaldo singled out for harsh treatment but the Colombian team came to shut down the game and they almost succeeded.
Rivaldo came close with a 25th minute header which Colombian defender Alex Viveros ran back to clear off the goal line.
Juan Pablo Angel wasted Colombia's best chance when he skied a chance that came to him from a corner.
