Scotland were dire at Hampden Park as Australia coped easily with Craig Brown's team to win 2-0.
The home side never got going in front of 31,000 disappointed fans and Brown's extravagant defence of the notion of friendly internationals was made to look poor reasoning by the miserable showing of his team.
Scotland are usually so organised and alert under Brown that this soporific game can be ruled an exception but Frank Farina's team took full advantage of their off-night to outclass the Scots at times.
Brett Emerson of Feyenoord gave the visitors the lead in the 14th minute when he cut inside from the right wing and threw a body swerve to get past Christian Dailly and create the space for his decisive shot which was driven under Jonathan Gould's body and into the far corner.
Stan Lazaridis lashed a free kick against the cross bar from distance as the Scots continued to stall. Only Sunderland midfielder Don Hutchinson, who was played in attack, offered any hope of getting shots at goal and Mark Schwarzer saved his low drive in the 39th minute to defy the home team's best chance of the night as it turned out.
David Zdrulic was free in space to head in a Paul Okon cross in the 65th minute and Australia then used passing and technique to shut down the game and progress to a well earned win.
