First Published: Nov 16, 2000

The US hit four goals in Waterford, Barbados, to ensure their qualification for the next stage of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2002 World Cup.

The visitors were under significant pressure to produce a result and stay alive in the World Cup and Barbados, already eliminated, were far more relaxed and organised at the start of the game. They were used to the bumpy pitch as well which helped their play.

Mathis had hit the cross bar in the 36th minute in the US' only real chance of the first half.

He made amends by driving in a cross in the 63rd minute to give his team the lead after he reached a ball put into the penalty area by Joe-Max Moore found him in space.

This boost allowed the US to take control of the game.

Ernie Stewart scored from long range with a great 73rd minute shot and four minutes later substitute Cobi Jones added a third with a close range finish. Razov completed the scoring after he replaced Moore.

Barbados hit the bar in the 49th minute when Tony Meola saved a Gregory Goodridge rising shot by touching it onto the frame of the goal.
