First Published: Nov 21, 2000

A mass brawl on the field ended this match that saw an Andriy Shevchenko penalty revive AC Milan after they had gone 2-0 down to Galatasary in the first half.

The two sides squared up to each other as debris came onto the pitch thrown by fans angered by Gala goalkeeper Kerem Inan who seemed to act injured after a clash in the penalty area.

Swiss referee Urs Meier managed to calm the situation with the Giuseppe Meazza stadium engulfed in frenzy.

The home fans saw their team come back from the dead in this match and Milan also had an Oliver Bierhoff goal disallowed for offside.

The Gala nerves were shredded by a powerful showing from Milan in the second half but the visitors dominated the first session.

Mario Jardel was on hand in the 39th minute to smash in a cross from Ergun with a sweet left foot volley.

Two minutes later and Milan were rocking after Hasan Sas exposed their offside trick and ran through on goal to head in a free kick from Gheorghe Hagi.

Milan replied with a wonderful volley from Shevchenko in the dying seconds of the half but Kerem tipped the ball away. There was still time for a Paolo Maldini drive to strike the post and the Turkish side now knew what to expect in the second half.

Milan rallied immediately and Jose Mari scored in the 48th minute after Roque Junior had crossed for the Spaniard to execute a low drive.

Vedat Inceefe was harshly penalised for handball in the 73rd minute and Shevchenko converted the penalty kick but Milan showed why they are struggling at the moment in many areas.
