Bayern Munich needed a deflected Jens Jeremies header in the 55th minute to defeat Olympique Lyon.
Bayern had lost their last two Bundesliga matches and looked very short of confidence as a well organised Lyon team blunted their attacks.
The home team were relying on long balls and knock downs from early on and this allowed Lyon to keep them at bay.
Jeremies rose well just before the hour mark to head in but his strike needed a Patrick Mueller deflection into the net past a floundering Gregory Coupet.
The goalkeeper saved the team several times as the game drew to a close as Bayern started to improve after the confidence boost of getting into the lead.
The French team almost equalised in the 72nd minute when defender Jeremie Brechet fired in a volley that Oliver Kahn did well to parry, showing that his concentration was intact after long spells of no attacks from Lyon.
