Valencia are through to the second stage of the Champions League after a 2-1 win at Lyon.
Last season's beaten finalists outplayed their opponents in the second half who lost midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe in the 61st minute for a second bookable offence.
By then Lyon were having to chase the game.
Juan Sanchez scored in the 43rd minute from a cross by John Carew against the run of play and the Spanish side only sealed their victory in the 85th minute when Ruben Baraja produced a neat low finish after a fast break.
Steven Marlet scored the consolation goal for Lyon with a diving header in injury time but Valencia did not look like losing their lead.
