Champions League - Juventus 1 Hamburg SV 1

First Published: Oct 24, 2000

Juventus had a disastrous night in Turin as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat against Hamburg SV with only nine men.

Both Zinedine Zidane and Edgar Davids were sent off in the first half and the Bundesliga team took full advantage to leave Juve chasing in November to put them through to the last sixteen.

The home side were already 1-0 down when Zidane was sent off for the second time in three Champions League matches.

UEFA reduced his three game ban earlier this month for his first red card but may not be so lenient this time.

Zidane aimed a headbutt at Jochen Kientz after both players fell over in the 29th minute and can expect severe punishment and four minutes later Davids was dismissed for a seond bookable offence after a foul.

There was no way back for Juve but the warning signs had started early for Carlo Ancelotti's team.

Roy Praeger headed in a chance that came to him when goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar could only parry a Stig Toefting shot into the air to let a header past him.

In the 48th minute Hamburg went further ahead Tony Yeboah converted a low cross from Marcel Ketelaer in front of goal but Juventus pulled a goal back when substitutes Alessandro Del Piero and Darko Kovacevic created a chance from a free kick.

Del Piero's clipped cross was volloeyed in by Kovacevic but Hamburg's Croatian defender Andrej Panadic sealed the win with close range header from an inswinging corner. This defeat could yet disturb Juve's entire season.
