Manchester United carefully controlled this tie in a wet Ukraine capital but had to survive a second half wave of attacks from a young Kyiv side.

The heavy rain made United play with little attempt to risk defeat and they were helped by Kyiv's decision to make most of their attacks on the break.

This decision allowed United's passing game to take over the they took charge of the tempo to steer the game towards a draw.

The 7th minute saw Ryan Giggs get down the left to cross for Dwight Yorke but he wanted to place his shot and directed the ball wide from the edge of the penalty area.

Yorke came close again in the 23rd minute with a low shot wide and Roy Keane turned and shot from the edge of the area as United dominated possession in the first half.

This changed when Kyiv came out and Maxim Shatskikh whipped a shot against the cross bar in the 47th minute.

Shatskikh forced a diving save from stand in United goalkeeper Raimond Van Der Gouw in the 68th minute with a dipping shot from 25 metres which the Dutchman touched onto the post.
