Champions League - Real Madrid 1 Spartak Moscow 0

Real Madrid looked poor on the night but were able to squeek past Spartak Moscow at the Bernabeu for a 1-0 win.

This scrappy and uneven match was won in the 50th minute when Roberto Carlos crossed for Ivan Helguera to slide in front of defenders and steer the ball into the net.

Although Real improved in the second half with Roberto Carlos raiding constantly down the left and Steve McManaman making a cameo appearance late on they were luckly to survive the best chances created by Spartak.

Luis Robson and Maksym Kalynychenko both hit the post at the end of the first half.
