Champions League - PSV Eindhoven 3 Manchester United 1

First Published: Sep 26, 2000

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson made big changes to his side and saw Eindhoven take control of this tie.

Ferguson put five players in midfield and used Dwight Yorke as a lone striker but Giggs, Sheringham, Johnsen, Beckham and Cole were all stuck on the bench from the start.

In their places Ferguson introduced Wes Brown, Jonathan Greening and the rebellious Yorke who left Old Trafford on Saturday after being dropped for the home draw with Chelsea. The whole United team was blasted by their manager after they let slip a 3-1 lead to Chelsea and the changes made by the boss were meant to remind the stars that Ferguson has other options.

Ferguson has also hinted that his stars are looking tired and they travel again to face Arsenal at Highbury when all the big names should return.

Despite the changes United took an early lead.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ran through to be challenged as he went wide of the target by goalkeeper Ronald Waterreus brought him down and Paul Scholes converted the penalty kick.

From that high point United lost their way as the packed midfield stumbled around and failed to control the game.

Back came PSVin the 12th minute when Wilfred Bouma chased a long high ball into the United goal area and got behind Phil Neville to drive into the net with hisleft foot.

Nicky Butt set up Greening with a cross but he fluffed fluffed his header and Dwight Yorke dragged a close range shot wide when United threatened again but PSV took the lead shortly before half time. Mark van Bommel was allowed too much space and took the ball on to finish low underneath Raimond Van Der Gouw.

Mateja Kezman was impressive all night and came close in the 47th minute with a curling shot that went just wide.

Kezman made no mistake after a great piece of work to carry the ball round Mickael Silvestre and drove into the net from a wide angle and Ferguson's experiment was dead.

David Beckham's main contribution after coming on as a substitute was to set up a chance for Butt with a cross which was cleared off the line in the 83rd minute. Seconds before that move Beckham had shouted angry abuse at Gary Neville for his poor passing with United heading for defeat. He was booked for dissent in the dying seconds.

PSV had a week off to rest before this game and such things are unheard of in the Premiership so the United excuses were already being rehearsed during a miserable second half showing. However, the English club have a point - players can only peak so often and Ferguson must hope his team of champions can recover in time to test Arsenal in London.
