Champions League - Valencia 1 Olympique Lyon 0

A late winner from Slovenian star Zlatko Zahovic all but put Valencia into the second stage of the Champions League after only three matches.

Three straight wins for last season's Champions League finalists make Valencia near certainties to progress and this efficient performance had all the usual elements of Hector Cuper's team.

Gaizka Mendieta missed a 38th minute penalty when Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet produced a fine save which he brilliantly followed up by stopping a shot on the rebound from Juan Sanchez.

Chances were very scarce in a scruffy second half but Zahovic hit the decisive shot after Kily Gonzalez - back from injury with a new contract at Valencia worth £20 million in wages - hit a through pass for the Slovenian to clip under Coupet
