Champions League - Real Madrid 3 SS Lazio 2

First Published: Feb 13, 2001

An 89th minute penalty scored by Luis Figo put Real Madrid into the Champions League quarter finals.

SS Lazio suffered their first defeat under coach Dino Zoff and go out of the competition.

Figo thrilled the home fans after he converted the penalty kick won by Pedro Munitis but Real lived on their nerves from the very start of this heavyweight clash.

Hernan Crespo gave Lazio a great boost when he scored in the 4th minute after he chased through a pass by Argentine midfielder Lucas Castroman.

Crespo then missed a chance to put Lazio 2-0 ahead but Real were starting to show some of the polish and confidence that made them such an impressive team to watch last month.

An equaliser was coming and Fernando Morientes was the instrument as he capped a neat passing move from Raul and Steve McManaman with a low drive on the turn.

The game swung from end to end with passing patterns all over midfield but the game ignited memorably in the last ten minutes.

In the build up to the finale Crespo had opened the second half by going one-on-one with Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas twice and fluffing the chances.

Ivan Helguera drove a good chance over the bar as did Roberto Carlos as Figo started to control the match.

Helguera made no mistake from four metres out when he connected with a loose ball but then Casillas made the home fans uneasy with his second mistake in two matches.

The young goalkeeper was blamed for the winner at Bilbao and dropped the ball at the feet of Lazio substitute Guerino Gottardi in the goal mouth before Figo produced his decisive finish.
