PSV Eindhoven ran out 2-1 winners at home against Parma AC but the Italian side are still in this tie with the second leg to come next week.
Parma tried to defend 0-0 and failed after Andre Ooijer cashed in on an inability to clear a dangerous cross from a goalmouth scramble to bury the half chance through a crowd of bodies.
Renzo Ulivieri's team chose not to chase the game but PSV were similarly conservative midway through the second half and did not pick up a run from Patrick Mboma who scored with a gentle header in the 67th minute.
The Dutch side responded in the 73rd minute when Dennis Rommedahl was played through on goal for a powerful drive.
