Champions League - Manchester United 1 Valencia 1

First Published: Feb 20, 2001

A late own goal from young defender Wes Brown handed Valencia a well deserved draw at Old Trafford and Manchester United will have to wait to secure their place in the last eight of the Champions League.

A Vicente cross was slapped into his own net by centre back Brown for a shot that Fabian Barthez could not stop. That was in the 81st minute but two minutes later Brown had been the hero when he cleared a Valencia corner from the goal line.

United wanted to get the win and then concentrate on the Premiership as they face Arsenal and Leeds United in successive games.

But they were outplayed for long stretches and were unable to recover from an injury to Ryan Giggs who created their goal.

In the 13th minute Giggs won a ball and ran down the left to send a low cross to Andy Cole who volleyed into the net.

Cole has now scored in four of the last six matches for United but he has been the only layer on target for the Manchester club and they did not look like adding to their lead.

They were not helped by the sight of Giggs consulting with the physiotherapist as his team mates celebrated the goal and he limped off four minutes later.

After this Gaizka Mendieta and Pablo Aimar took over the match as Scholes was placed on the left hand side to his obvious discomfort with Nicky Butt introduced in the centre of midfield. Butt was later booked and will be suspended for the trip to Panathinaikos. Sturm Graz overtook United with a 2-1 win in Athens and the English club are now third in the section.

Pablo Aimar wasted a good chance to equalise when he pulled a shot wide late in the first half and United struggled during much of the second session.

The loss of Giggs allowed Angloma to raid down the left in a physical match that saw the Spanish side try to goad David Beckham with some late challenges and the England captain was eventually booked but stayed in control of his temper.
