Arsenal were doing just enough to beat Olympique Lyon at Highbury but they sat back and threw away a last minute goal in a poor performance by the English team.
Edmilson rose majestically to power in a corner that was a deserved equaliser in the 89th minute and the home team were hanging on to survive for a point at the end.
The London club will now look to revive the Premiership title race at Old Trafford on Sunday by beating Manchester United and the champions will prove stiffer opposition than Lyon who were not a strong attacking force but Arsenal failed to kill them off.
The home side created two good chances in the first half and scored from one of them.
By the time Ray Parlour fluffed a good chance from in front of goal Arsenal were leading but they were lucky not to be penalised in the build up to the goal.
Dennis Bergkamp scored with a decisive low finish in the 32nd minute but the Dutch star clearly fouled Edmilson in the build up to the finish. Both players were trying to win a bouncing ball but Bergkamp shoved the Brazilian in the back to latch onto the pass from Robert Pires but no foul was given.
Lyon only revived in the last fifteen minutes when substitute Vikash Dhorasoo came on and took his place in a four man attack that pushed Arsenal back into their own penalty area but clear chances.
This tactic saw Arsenal try to waste time and Lyon eventually got the reward for their positive second half attitude.
