Madrid club Rayo Vallecano reached the last eight of a European competition for the first time with a convincing 2-1 win at Girondins Bordeaux.
Rayo finished the tie as 6-2 winners and from the 18th minute the French club were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Ulrich Rame - named today in the France squad to face Germany next week - was red carded for charging out of his goal and cutting down Jon Perez Bolo. Rame's foul also conceded a penalty which Luis Cembranos converted easily against substitute Frederic Roux.
But Bordeaux fought back well and levelled four minutes later when veteran forward Christophe Dugarry crossed and his hopeful ball in was headed in for an own goal by defender Mingo.
Bolo scored Rayo's second away goal of the night five minutes into the second half when he struck a low shot into the net while unmarked.
Lilian Laslandes wasted a great chance to equalise but missed an open goal to head against the crossbar.
Rayo will face Internazionale or fellow Liga club Alaves in the quarter finals.
