UEFA Cup - Liverpool 0 AS Roma 1

First Published: Feb 22, 2001

A tense night at Anfield saw Liverpool survive a late fightback from AS Roma to go through to the last eight of the UEFA Cup.

Substitute Gianni Guigou scored the winner in the 70th minute with a fading shot with his left foot from distance and Liverpool showed nerves as they tried to resist the Italian league leaders who had captain Damiano Tomassi red carded for a second bookable offence as Spanish referee Jose Maria-Garcia Aranda lost control of the game.

Tomassi was booked for arguing with the referee after the Spaniard gave a penalty to Roma for handball by Markus Babel but then changed his mind after twice pointing to the penalty spot in a session of play that could see him suspended by UEFA.

Michael Owen missed a penalty at the start of the second half when his shot was saved by Francesco Antonioli but it was a harsh decision by Aranda to award the spot kick in the first half and this prompted plenty of Roma aggression as they showed their class to dominate long spells of this match with their passing. he game ended in several feuds and scuffles but there was hardly a bad challenge over the two legs but Roma felt they had the worse of the referee tonight.
