UEFA Cup - Internazionale 0 CD Alaves 2

First Published: Feb 22, 2001

Internazionale were left in tatters with fans besieging the directors' box after two late goals from Jordi Cruyff and Ivan Tomic sent the Milan giants crashing out of the UEFA Cup.

Inter - one of the most expensively assembled squads in football history - have now only a fight against relegation from Serie A to occupy their season with the prospect of further revolts against an ailing squad.

The Italian media are sure to produce all the stories of turmoil and despair now surrounding the fallen giant which is still fighting off the passport scandal. Chief speculation over the coming days will see coach Marco Tardelli replaced with either Hector Cuper or Daniel Passarella with Gianluca Vialli and Frank Rijkaard also sure to be mentioned. Ronaldo wants to quit and return to Brazil and Christian Vieri wants leave Inter for Spain if he can in the summer are just two of the rumours which surface regularly about Inter. It was thought that the bloodleting was over at the club for now after the removal of coach Lippi but president Massimo Moratti does not keep calm in a crisis and Tardelli must be on borrowed time now after tonight's late collapse.

The crisis at Inter is so great and the glamorous club is such a ruinous circus these days that their problems detract from the exceptional achievement of CD Alaves in winning through to the last eight of the UEFA Cup.

The Liga side came from 3-1 down at their own ground last week to set up this memorable win.

The 78th minute saw Jordi Cryuff cap a spell of domination by Alaves with a low drive on the run from twenty metres and five minutes later it was al over for Inter as Tomic produced a crisp finish with his left foot after a counter attack.

This goal was the cue for Inter fans to turn on the club's directors and shower the pitch with debris. Their club is in hell right now.
