UEFA Cup - Celta Vigo 2 VfB Stuttgart 1

First Published: Feb 22, 2001

Celta Vigo beat VfB Stuttgart to become the fourth club from Spain's Liga into the UEFA Cup quarter finals.

Valery Karpin set up the win after only six minutes when he shot from the edge of the penalty area but Stefan Blank equalised in the last minute of the first half with a volley from a corner kick which dropped near goal.

Celta will face FC Barcelona in the last eight and have also drawn Barca in the Spanish Cup this season.

The Spanish side dominated but needed Alexander Mostovoi's 85th minute winner stretched to meet a cross and score to win the match and make them safe from Stuttgart's dangerous away goal. Mostovoi had twice hit the post with low drives earlier in the match.
