2002 World Cup - Senegal 1 Morocco 0

First Published: Jul 14, 2001

Morocco blew their chance to seal a place in the 2002 World Cup finals by losing 1-0 in Dakar to Senegal.

RC Lens striker El Hadji Ousseynou Diouf scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute with a low drive to leave Morocco fretting over their World Cup future. Diouf has now hit seven goals in the tournament so far and was put clear by a long punt forward from defence by Ferdinand Coly.

Group C will end in two weeks with Egypt, Senegal and Morocco all chasing the one place available for the 2002 finals in Japan and South Korea.

But Morocco are at a disadvantage despite remaining top of the section as their games are now over. Egypt and Senegal will chase away wins to try and edge out Morocco on goal difference.

Egypt hammered Namibia 8-2 last night and are now in with a great chance of reaching the finals.

They have a goal difference of plus nine, two goals more than Senegal. Morocco's goal difference is plus five, meaning they will only qualify for the World Cup if both Egypt and Senegal fail to win in two weeks' time which now seems unlikely.

Egypt must win in Algeria though in a game which has been put back to July 28th to kick-off at the same time as Senegal's game in Windhoek against Namibia.
