Copa America - Brazil 3 Paraguay 0

First Published: Jul 19, 2001

Brazil coach Luis Felipe Scolari and his assistant Flavio Murtuso were both sent off as four red cards were shown in Cali.

Brazil needed only a draw to reach the quarter finals and started poorly to concede an 11th minute penalty which Guido Alvarenga converted. Then Brazil started to play and they hit the crossbar twice with long range efforts but they trailed at half time.

Roque Juinor was the first player to be sent off for a second booking after a heavy challenge in the 55th minute. On the hour mark Alex equalised with a low drive as Denilson started to influence the play. Belletti and Denilson scored from close range in the final minutes to win the game for Brazil but by then the Scolari incident had taken place.

The coach decided to celebrate Alex's goal by making an obscene gesture at the referee and was sent off. He did not leave the playing area and instead hid on stairs leading to the changing rooms to look out from time to time at the match.

When the referee or line official looked in his direction Scolari attempted to duck out of view and hide as Murtosa took his place. Scolari's assistant was then sent off for dissent at the referee with Paraguay defender Denis Caniza also being red carded for throwing a punch late in the game.
