2002 World Cup - Algeria 1 Egypt 1

First Published: Jul 22, 2001

Egypt flopped in Annaba to blow their chances of reaching the 2002 World Cup finals.

Senegal's win and Egypt's failure to win in Algeria sent Senegal through as group C winners in the first major upset of World Cup qualification for 2002. Morocco are also out after they completed their matches last week and had to wait and see how their rivals performed. To go through Morocco needed both Egypt and Senegal to lose but the Senegalese ended up two goals better off than their rivals to go through on goal difference.

Egypt were ten minutes from taking a place at Japan and Korea after Ahmad Hossam had scored a penalty in the 54th minute which was awarded for a foul. This saw home fans pelt the pitch with missiles and debris that delayed the match for nearly 15 minutes. Both the Annaba and Windhoek games were scheduled to start at the same time.

Senegal were leading in Windhoek by 3-0 and still lacked the goal difference necessary to edge out the Egyptians but two more goals for the Senegalese improved their goal difference

Yacine Bezzaz equalised from close range to end Egypt's hopes and they rarely controlled the game for long against an Algerian team that was rumoured to be a weak side in the run up to the tie after an inexperienced squad was chosen by them.
