Mexico 3 Brazil 3

First Published: Mar 08, 2001

Romario saved Brazil from defeat in Guadalajara with the last kick of this entertaining game.

Mexico produced some fine football to get into the lead in front of their own fans but the Brazilians have the ability to call on glamourous strikers who can change matches and the 35 year old veteran proved their saviour at the Jalisco stadium when he turned and shot on a difficult to control cross to send the ball past goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez with a first time shot from the outside of his right foot.

It was his second goal of the game and his 64th for Brazil.

Mexico were given a great start - they were poorly received at the start of the game after a recent World Cup defeat by the US - when captain Claudio Suarez drifted past Brazilian defenders to head in a 66th minute corner kick.

The home team relished the chance to lead Brazil and they played with confidence and good passing that stretched the visiting team and they extended their lead in the 56th minute when Miguel Zepeda crossed for Antonio De Nigris to score on his debut with a well-timed jump and volley which gave goalkeeper Rogerio no chance.

Two minutes later Rivaldo appeared to play the ball through to an offside Edilson but he was allowed to run in and score from close range.

Romario scored his first of the night in the 80th minute when he reached a Lucio head on from a corner kick and the Vasco da Gama star was in space to steer the ball in as it dropped in front of goal.

Mexico responded when substitute Jesus Arellano reached a through pas and chipped the ball over an advancing Rogerio into the net but Romario stole the game and the headlines from Mexico right at the death.
