2002 World Cup - Peru 3 Chile 1First Published: Mar 28, 2001Chile are going nowhere after this 3-1 defeat in Lima which could have been much heavier but the home side just found it too easy to play through the visitors and lost their edge. The statistics showed that Peru launched twenty shots on target in an entertaining game which all but ends Chile's chances of reaching the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea next year. Chile were finalists last time out in France but are now eighth in a ten team qualifying section with only ten points from eleven matches. Peru have eleven points and are not realistic contenders for a top five finish they need but their young team is capable of producing good results. It took Peru until the 53rd minute to actually score but they were dominating from the start of the match and had three good chances to get the goal tally going with Werder Bremen forward Claudio Pizarro fluffing all of the best moves in front of goal. Substitute Flavio Maestri finally found the target in a completely one-sided tie. He headed in a looping cross from the right hand side but Chile responded with their best attack of the game when Reinaldo Navia and Ivan Zamorano exchanged passes to release Navia for a low finish. This was as good as it got for the visiting team whose coach was stoned by Peru fans on the way to the stadium. Maestri almost scored a second goal but sent a weak header wide when directly in front of an empty goal in the best miss of the game but Andres Mendoza did score in the 73rd minute with a header from a corner. Pizarro made some amends for his lack of finishing earlier in when he met a Martin Hidalgo cross to tap the ball in. Chile's best player remained Nelson Tapia who made excellent late saves from Pizarro and Tapia and Pizarro may not want to watch the videotape of this match again. He should have had seven goals as Chile fell apart. All Content is Copyright © 2001 WorldSoccerNews.com. All rights reserved. This material is intended solely for personal use.
