2002 World Cup - Wales 1 Belarus 0First Published: Oct 06, 2001 P>Belarus fluffed their chance to reach the 2002 World Cup play-offs by losing 1-0 to Wales in Cardiff. The win was the first for Wales in twelve matches and helped Ukraine clinch the play-off place to face Germany next month with their 1-1 draw against Poland. A 47th minute winner from John Hartson was no more than coach Mark Hughes' team deserved for dominating the first hour of the match. The Celtic player was unmarked to head in a Simon Davies cross past goalkeeper Gennadi Tumilovich and into the bottom right corner of the net. Craig Bellamy starred for the home team and had his close range shot saved by Tumilovich's legs in the fifth minute and the goalkeeper needed to get down and use his legs again in the fifteenth minute to save from Davies. Tumilovich saved a free kick from Bellamy in the 35th minute and Davies on 63 minutes wasted the best chance for the home team in the second half when he scooped the ball over from close range with Tumilovich beaten. Piotr Kachura produced a whipped drive on the run to force an agile save from Paul Jones in the 81st minute but it was not nearly enough. All Content is Copyright © 2001 WorldSoccerNews.com.
