The Republic of Ireland failed in their goal chase against Portugal and now face an Asian team next month in the play-offs.

Their opposition has yet to be decided and the Irish finished ten goals worse off than Portugal but there was still something to celebrate for the Irish fans.

After Ian Harte blasted a third minute free kick from long range Niall Quinn scored a record-breaking 21st goal for the national team.

It was Quinn's 35th birthday today and he had been stuck on 20 goals with former Arsenal and Manchester United striker Frank Stapleton for more than a year but he headed in from close range to take the record for himself.

David Connolly made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute with a cross shot before Roy Keane raided from midfield neat the end to slam in a low cross.
