2002 World Cup - Croatia 1 Belgium 0First Published: Oct 06, 2001Croatia claimed a place in the 2002 World Cup finals and sent Belgium into the play-offs with a late Alen Boksic goal in Zagreb. Aston Villa substitute Bosko Balaban ran down the left wing and centred with a pull back for veteran Boksic to stroke in the winner. Robert Prosinecki missed a first half penalty when referee Helmut Krug pointed to the penalty spot after an outrageous dive by Goran Vlaiovic but the Portsmouth play maker slapped his shot against the cross bar with the ball seeming to bounce over the goal line before it was cleared. Vlaiovic missed the target on ten minutes when he fluffed his finish to send the ball at goalkeeper Geert de Vlieger when a header from Nico van Kerckhoven went astray and put his opponent clear. Eric Deflandre cleared the ball from the goal line when a Zvonimir Soldo shot ended a scramble from a corner kick. Croatian goalkeeper Stipe Pletikosa saved a Bart Goor shot from an Emile Mpenza cross but Croatia dominated in the first half. Robert Jarni sent in a dipping 57th minute free kick that was cleared from under the cross bar and De Vlieger was called on again to save a rising shot from Balaban in the 80th minute.
