World Cup 2002: Brazil 2 Chile 0First Published: Oct 09, 2001 Brazil were one step closer to qualification with a straightforward if unimpressive 2-0 win over Chile. Brazil, four times world champions and the only country to have played in every World Cup, are struggling to retain a qualifying fourth place in the COMNEBOL group. The first half finished scoreless, as Brazil failed to break through a stifling Chilean defence. It was not until the 53rd minute, after Denilson had been brought on at half time, that Brazil showed inspiration. It was Flamengo striker Edilson, who had only been called up at the last minute as a replacement for injured Ronaldo, that took first advantage of Denilson's piercing runs from the wing deep into the Chilean defence. Barcelona striker and former World Player of the Year Rivaldo overcame injury to make the game certain with the second goal on the 67th minute with a shot at full stretch past the Chilean keeper. He immediately ran over to hug and thank the team doctor Dr Jose Luiz Runco. Brazil have two games left in which they have to do well to confirm their place in the finals, against Bolivia on the 8th and Venezuela on the 14th of November. If Brazil fall to fifth place in the group then they will have to play off against an unbeaten Australia. Presently Uruguay hold 5th place with 2 points less than Brazil. Chile are bottom of the group and have already failed to qualify. All Content is Copyright © 2001 WorldSoccerNews.com. All rights reserved. This material is intended solely for personal use.
