World Cup 2002: Uruguay 1 Colombia 1First Published: Oct 09, 2001 Uruguay did themselves no favours with a 1-1 draw against Colombia. Uruguay, once a world leader in football, are now struggling in fifth place in the CONMEBOL qualification group and, if it stays this way, they will have to play off against an unbeaten Australian side for a place in the World Cup. Uruguay took the lead in the 34th minute with a penalty by Federico Magallanes and remained dominant in the first half. Three minutes from half time Recoba took the ball from half way, to deep into the Colombia defence and shot low and hard. It went straight to keeper Cordoba, however, who let no more in. In the second half, Colombia came on fired up, and kept the pressure on Uruguay, scoring on the 66th minute. The scorer was playmaker Valentierra who took a pass, stepped sideways and shot a high ball over Uruguayan keeper Gustavo Munua who was off his line. Colombia are now 4 points shy of Uruguay and have only a statistical chance of qualifying for the finals. All Content is Copyright © 2001 WorldSoccerNews.com. All rights reserved.
