Uzbekistan won and lost at the end of their 2002 World Cup qualifying campaign.

The Uzbeks defeated China but saw the UAE claim the play-off place from group B by drawing 2-2 in Oman.

Striker Nikolai Shirshov scored the only goal in injury time to leave his side third place in the five team group just one point behind the UAE.

New Uzbek coach Leonid Ostoushko saw his side improve in the second half and in the 93rd minute Shirsov was put clear for a low finish by a through pass from Sergei Lushan.
