2002 World Cup - Iran 1 United Arab Emirates 0

First Published: Oct 26, 2001

Iran will take a slender lead to the United Arab Emirates as they look to get through Asia's World Cup qualifying play-offs.

Ahead of the winners lies a two-leg play-off against the Republic of Ireland in November for a place at the 2002 World Cup finals.

Iran now have to defend their one goal lead in Abu Dhabi on October 31st given to them by captain Karim Bagheri.

In the 44th minute a corner kick from Ali Karimi was punched clear by Emirates goalkeeper Mutaz Abdulla but the ball fell to a lurking Bagheri who drove low through a ruck of players and into the net.

Iran dominated the first half in particular as striker Ali Karimi led attacks with his best shot forcing Abdulla to push the ball onto the post.
