Slovenia 1 Honduras 5

First Published: Feb 12, 2002

Slovenia crashed to a 5-1 defeat against Honduras in Hong Kong with striker Saul Martinez scoring four goals.

FIFA named Honduras as their Team of the Year just before Christmas and they were far too strong for the European side who will feature in the World Cup finals.

Martinez scored his first goal in the 40th minute when he dragged the ball around diving goalkeeper Marko Simeunovic but Zlatko Zahovic scored a 53rd minute equaliser with a penalty before it all went wrong for Slovenia.

On 58 minutes Martinez beat off two challengers to run hard and launch a shot high into the top corner of the net. He then hit a low drive on the run in the 67th minute and six minutes later turned in a low cross from Amado Guevara.

He was then replaced by substitute Cristian Martinez who hit a powerful shot in the dying seconds to add a fifth goal.

Milenko Acimovic had headed a Zahovic free kick onto the post in the 7th minute but they struggled badly against Honduras for the rest of the game.
