African Nations Cup - Egypt 2 Zambia 1

First Published: Jan 31, 2002

Egypt went through to the African Nations Cup quarter finals with a 2-1 win over Zambia.

They now meet holders Cameroon on Monday and went into the lead in the 35th minute after Hazem Emam set up Ahmed Hossam for a neat finish on the run as Zambia goalkeeper Phiri Davies failed to get off his line in time to cut out the chance which went in at an angle.

Emam scored himself in the 53rd minute when he went clear to round Davies and tuck the ball in.

Zambia responded with a 76th minute consolation from substitute Gift Kampamba which after he touched in an Elijah Tana free kick was all they had to show for a bright start that saw Andrew Sinkala slide the ball to Numba Mumumba in the 21st minute for a narrow miss with a clever chip on the run over goalkeeper Essam El Hadary which dropped over the crossbar.

Harry Milanzi hit wide when unmarked with four minutes to go after another Tana free kick caused major problems for the Egyptian defence.
