World Cup - China 0 Turkey 3

First Published: Jun 13, 2002

Umit Davala hit a late goal to secure the win that sent Turkey into the second round of the World Cup.

The goal enlivened a poor second half from the Turks and came on 84 minutes when Umit volleyed in a great crossfield pass from Hasan Sas.

A heavy defeat for Costa Rica was sending the Turks through as well as this win which against ten-manChina was less than comfortable in the second half.

Hakan Sukur forced a save from Jiang Jin and Amre Asik hit a shot wide but Turkey were thankful for a better first half effort and goals from Brazil.

Turkey got the job done early.

Hasan Sas made the most on the right hand side of the penalty area after two Chinese defenders failed to clear the ball and the winger drove high into the far corner on six minutes.

Two minutes later Bulent Korkmaz all but sealed the win by heading in a corner kick after more weak defending from the Chinese.

On the 28th minute China had their best chance when Chen Yang slashed a left foot volley against the post but Turkey were comfortable although bookings for Emre and Emre Asik means they will miss the next game in suspension.
