World Cup - Senegal 2 Sweden 1 after extra time

First Published: Jun 16, 2002

Only the second golden goal in World Cup history sent Senegal into the last eight at their first ever finals.

Winger Henri Camara glided past two Swedish defenders in the 14th minute of the first half of extra time to hit a low shot past goalkeeper Magnus Hedman in off the post.

In the 5th minute of over time Andreas Svensson almost won the tie for Sweden when his clever drag back in the penalty area gave him space to crash a shot against the post.

El Hadji Diouf in the 8th minute of extra time beat two defenders on the edge of the penalty area before slicing a shot across the face of goal and the tired sides were both willing to attack and win the game to try and avoid a penalty shoot out with the very impressive Camara hitting the decisive shot.

Sweden started very well and deserved their early lead.

Olaf Mellberg was on the end of a well-worked free kick routine in the 4th minute that saw him shoot unmarked from the right wing but goalkeeper Tony Sylva got down to save. Senegal responded with centre forward Pape Thiaw turning and shooting over the crossbar as Andreas Jakobsson failed to close him down but the African side then conceded.

A simple corner kick to the near post saw Henrik Larsson move ahead of his marker to head down and in on one bounce and Sylva put off his defenders by calling for the ball to be his but never reaching the cross.

But the Swedes started to tire in the heat even though they had the advantage.

They sat back to defend their lead but lost momentum.

El Hadji Diouf should have been given a penalty on 15 minutes for a clear push over in the area by Jakobsson but referee Ubaldo Aquino warned the Senegal star against diving which he also did later in the half when another penalty shout came his way.

Diouf had been pushed wide onto the left wing by coach Bruno Metsu to allow Thiaw to play as an orthodox centre forward and it took time for the Senegal team to work the system properly but once they did the Swedes we completely pushed back and on the defensive.

Diouf tortured Olaf Mellberg with his speed and quick feet and set up a goal for Pape Diop on 25 minutes but it was ruled offside.

But if Diouf failed then speedy winger Henri Camara on the right wing would succeed and his inventive play brought the 37th minute equalizer.

The winger chested down a Diop header and carried the ball wide of Mellberg to drive in low and hard across goalkeeper Magnus Hedman and into the far corner of the net.

Camara then sent a header wide when he was unmarked after a good run down the left wing by Amdy Faye in the 41st minute.

Senegal came from a goal down to win the game but had to stave off pressure from Sweden towards the end of the second half but few chances were created by either side until extra time introduced sudden death.
