World Cup - Turkey 1 Senegal 0First Published: Jun 22, 2002Turkey are in the World Cup semi finals thanks to substitute Ilhan Mansiz and a golden goal winner four minutes into extra time. Umit Davala rna down the right wing to drive in a cross to the near post when an unmarked Mansiz was able to strike the ball first time, a glancing blow into the far corner. The first half produced several great chances for Turkey. Veteran striker Hakan Sukur continued his miserable World Cup form by missing an 87th minute open goal. Tugay launched a diagonal pass into Hasan Sas’ run down the left wing for a cross in front of goal which Sukur allowed to let slip underneath his shot and away with the goal gaping in front of him. Two minutes later Sukur let a cross from Sas run past him when a right foot volley was on at goal and in the 39th minute Sukur missed an Ergun Pembe cross after more good work from midfield holding player Tugay. Turkey continued to press with great skill and passing movements. Omar Daf saved a certain goal when he cleared a header on the run from Yildiry Basturk from the goal line as the midfielder nipped in to head a driven cross from deep on the right wing past goalkeeper Tony Sylva. Senegal played well on the break but wanted far too much time on the ball to get their shots off. El Hadji Diouf turned inside when clear on the left side of the penalty area in first half stoppage time after Henri Carama had beaten two defenders on a crossfield run but the striker’s shot was blocked as it left his foot. Khalilou Fadiga had earlier hit a shot into the side netting on 23 minutes but both sides struggled to create clear chances in the second half despite good approach play. Basturk had a goal-bound shot blocked after he had cut inside from the right to aim at the far corner and Turkey coach Senol Gunes had finally seen enough of Sukur’s misery and replaced him in the 70th minute with Ilhan Mansiz whose second touch a minute later saw him cleverly chip onto the roof of the net. But he was to win the game with his next decisive touch and give Turkey a re-match after their opening game defeat against Brazil which they led at half time earlier this month.
