FC Barcelona complete Alfonso transfer

First Published: Aug 14, 2000

FC Barcelona have completed the signing of Spanish international Alfonso.

The Euro 2000 star was in talks for more than nine weeks with the Catalan club to rejoin coach Llorenc Serra Ferrer who guided him through his best days at Real Betis before relegation last season for the Seville club made Alfonso a transfer target.

Serra Ferrer has given the player a four year contract and paid Betis £8 million. The 27 year old started his career at Real Madrid but has already spent one spell at Barca and played for Deportivo La Coruna.

Alfonso is to earn £1.2 million a season at his new club and recovered from serious knee surgery five years ago to rebuild his career.
