Brazil recall Romario

First Published: Aug 18, 2000

Brazil coach Wanderley Luxemburgo has bowed to media demands that Romario be brought back into the Brazil squad.

The 35 year old veteran was the focus of attention as various pundits named the Vasco da Gama star as one player who could revive the Brazil side's dismal attacking form.

Brazil lost 3-0 in Chile earlier this week in their second World Cup qualifying defeat in three matches.

A storm of abuse has broken around Luxemburgo who was already unpopular. Brazil play Bolivia on September 3rd and the team have scored only nine goals in seven matches.

Former Atletico Madrid player Juninho is recalled but AC Milan goalkeeper Dida is dropped. Andre was named despite Cruzeiro claiming the goalkeeper had a knee injury which will keep him out for the year.

The CBF heard this news late and he has now been removed from the squad.

Romario last played for Brazil in April 1998 but was recalled for a tour of Europe in May only to pull out with an injury.

Five years ago Luxemburgo was dumped by Rio club Flamengo when his bid to discipline Romario for missing training was not backed by the board.

The pair feuded for while after this and their relationship is at best cool.

The under-23 squad for next month's Olympics was also named today by Luxemburgo.
