Luxemburgo slammed by Brazil greats

First Published: Aug 18, 2000

Coach Wanderley Luxemburgo is surely living the worst few days of his professional career as his work with the Brazilian national team is heavily criticized after the 3-0 defeat against Chile.

Pele has accused him of not knowing how to select the first team as he has already chosen several different sides during the World Cup qualifiers writes Raafel Salido. Pele is convinced that Brazil will finally be in the World Cup finals in 2002 and thinks that Luxemburgo should give more chances to the young players that will be going to the Olympic Games as playing for the senior side in such a complicated situation would give them lots of experience for the future.

Not only the former Sao Paolo idol has been criticising Luxemburgo, as also some former Brazil managers have done the same in an interview with "Jornal Do Brasil". Carlos Alberto Silva and Tele Santana Sebastian Lazaroni alleged that scoring only nine goals in seven matches is a pretty poor record for such a team and some of them even pleaded for Romario to return to the national squad despite his age of 35.

On the other hand the vice-president of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed Luxemburgo as the national team manager until the next World Cup takes place and said that if they meet in the following days it will only be to decide the final list of players that will be going to the Olympic Games next month.

Luxemburgo has said he woll be taking any player over 23 years of age as he wants to maintain the squad that qualified for Sidney 2000, his only doubt is whether to go to the Olympics with the team or stay in Brazil for the World Cup Qualifier match against Colombia in the beginning of September.
