Taylor to keep England job next year

First Published: Nov 28, 2000

Leicester City manager Peter Taylor will take charge of the England team for their friendly against Spain at Villa Park in February.

Taylor will be joined by Manchester United assistant coach Steve McClaren in a repeat of the team that led England to a 1-0 defeat in Italy three weeks ago.

The English FA have been told by SS Lazio that their coach Sven Goran Eriksson will not be released to help England in February or for two 2002 World Cup qualifiers in March. Eriksson has a five year contract with England which starts next July.

Taylor has been reassured that he will have sole charge over team selection and tactics for the Spain game and is a contender to take charge of the World Cup ties as well.
