Hiddink set to coach South Korea at World Cup

First Published: Nov 28, 2000

2002 World Cup co-hosts South Korea want to hire Guus Hiddink to help them reach the latter stages of the finals.

Hiddink was the Dutch national team coach at France 98 and took his team to the semi finals.

He then left the KNVB post to take charge at Real Madrid but he was fired before the end of the year. A short spell at Real Betis last season failed to save the Seville club from relegation and in the spring the 54 year old had lengthy talks with Glasgow Celtic about coaching the Scottish giants before rejecting the offer.

The South Koreans have started negotiations to offer Hiddink a two year contract to replace current coach Huh Jung-moo who has decided to quit after recent problems in the Asian Cup.

South Korea also did poorly at the Sydney Olympics.

Hiddink has now been offered the chance to coach the team until June 2000 with a lucrative bonus scheme for success at the finals.
