Peru sack Maturana

Peru are to appoint Julio Cesar Uribe as their new national team coach.

The Peruvian Football Association (FPF) sacked coach Francisco "Pancho" Maturana last night due to the poor results obtained by the national team in the World Cup qualifying round writes Rafael Salido.

The Colombian legend had failed to ensure a chance for the Peruvian team to participate in World Cup 2002, having won only two matches, drawn another two and lost four.

The recent 2-1 defeat against Argentina in Lima this last weekend has been the final reason for the FPF to put and end to his disappointing spell in charge of the national team.

Uribe has been working with the under-21 side and has been asked to take over the senior team.
