Leverkusen fight to keep Nowotny

First Published: Sep 12, 2000

Bayer Leverkusen are fighting to keep defender Jens Nowotny after interest from Arsenal.

The Bundesliga club know the Londoners are prepared to pay £4.5 million for the veteran German international who can play as a centre back or sweeper.

Leverkusen manager Rainer Calmund has denied that the club are set to sell Nowotny to Arsenal but the player's agent told 'Express' daily in Germany today that a deal could be completed soon.

Nowotny also has experience as a midfielder for both club and country and was part of the Euro 2000 squad in June but Arsenal want him to play at centre back.

Leverkusen have made a poor start to the new Bundesliga season and face Spartak in Moscow tonight as their Champions League campaign starts.
