Stam faces ankle surgery

First Published: Sep 21, 2000

Manchester United are preparing to send Dutch centre back Jaap Stam for surgery on a persistent ankle problem.

Stam could miss at least two months of the season if a specialist tells the Premiership leaders next week to send Stam for an operation.

The Dutch defender has been suffering with an Achilles tendon problem since before Euro 2000 and but the 28 year old has been delaying treatment until the first phase of the Champions League is completed. With United already well placed to progress the club are considering sending Stam for surgery and introducing Wes Brown back into the first team alongside Ronnie Johnsen and perhaps Ronnie Wallwork.

Stam is doubtful for the visit of Chelsea to Old Trafford on Saturday morning but will perhaps play before his immediate medical future is sorted out.

The Dutchman could also miss Holland's 2002 World Cup qualifiers against Cyprus and Portugal next month if an operation is ordered.
